Add a Nip/Tuck to your Vacation

September 11, 2005 - It seems that Cancun, Tijuana and Acapulco are becoming more than just fun and sun vacation destinations as everyone from housewives to retirees are slipping south for a weeklong vacation drenched with margaritas, a little salsa music and maybe a little tummy tuck.

The U.S. and Mexican governments estimate a growing trend in the number of Americans heading south for plastic surgery for half the price of what theyd pay for the same surgery in the U.S.

Mexican plastic surgeon, Dr. Alejandro J. Quiroz, says that there are plenty of qualified surgeons to Americas south. Quiroz, a board certified surgeon in both the United States and in Mexico explains that surgeons located over the boarder are able to charge less for plastic surgery because they have lower overhead costs. For example, Quiroz charges about half for the same surgery at his Mexico clinic then he would in Arizona where the same procedure can cost from double to five times more money.

However, Tucson-area plastic surgeon, Dr. Todd Case, warns against the price that many have paid for their southern bargains. "Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean it's as safe, says Dr. Case, who recalls treating many patients whove came home with ghastly souvenirs from Mexican border clinics. Case recalls treating patients with serious infections and major complications - including asymmetrical breast implants and uneven liposuction.
