Breast Cancer and Augmentation
I am 53 years old and am considering breast augmentation. I have small breasts and would like to be a 36B. My concern is the risk of developing cancer in my normal breasts after augmentation. Are mammograms still effective after augmentation? What are the statistics of developing cancer after augmentation? I have no history of breast cancer in my family.
Answer:
To date, I have not found any studies that indicate that augmentation contributes to getting breast cancer. However, augmentation surgery can have many other negative consequences including subsequent surgeries to correct problems that arise. Surgery of any kind is serious for your body and costly. And, women are advised to inform mammography technicians if they have breast implants. There are reports of implants being deflated during mammograms.
