Nursing Bras
Nursing bras come in three basic styles.
- Underwire nursing bra: Just like regular bras, some nursing bras have under wire. These bras will provide support. However, it is important to note, that there is increasing evidence that breast health is compromised by wearing restrictive, tight bras of any style on a regular basis. Certainly, you should never sleep wearing any style of bra. And you want to be sure that your underwire nursing bra (or any bra for that matter) is not putting too much pressure on your breast. Pressure can lead to blocked ducts and mastitis. Both are painful and ideally avoided.
- Underwire free nursing bra: If you are unaccustomed to underwire bras, there is no sense starting now. The underwire free nursing bra will be more comfortable. If you are accustomed to underwire, but want to make a healthy change, your first few days of going underwire-free may feel odd. With time, your breasts will become accustomed to this less restrictive garment.
- Nursing bras with flaps: For your nursing convenience, many nursing bras are made with flaps that can be detached without having to undo the bra. The nursing flaps are designed for discreet, easy access nursing, and on some bras, they can be adjusted to accommodate a changing cup size. Occasionally, the flaps do not unclasp easily. This could be very frustrating if you have a hungry crying baby on your hands.
