History of the Breast

The history of the bra is interesting. But the world history of the breast is riveting.

Obviously, breasts have been around for a very long time. Over the course of this very long time, the female breast has been the subject of much heated political and social debate by both men and women. Quite clearly, a woman's breast is a significant and powerful force to be reckoned with. But who should be doing the reckoning? Who is in charge of the female breast in modern society? Men or women?

The History of the Breast is a wonderful 25,000-year overview that attempts to answer this very question. It is fascinating to discover that the answer varies according to the place and time. As example, the mass sexualized North American view of the breast does not reflect the opinion of the African or South Pacific cultures. The book goes through several subcategories for defining the breast including the sacred breast, the erotic breast, the domestic breast, the political breast, the commercialized breast and even the medical breast.

Another interesting book that reveals the breast in the context of pop culture is The Breast Book. Described as an “intimate and curious history,” The Breast Book provides fascinating tidbits of information and wonderful full color photos that span the world of fine art and Hollywood, Barbie and bra-burning. An excellent coffee table book that is sure to inspire conversation.

May we also recommend that you consider getting a subscription to Bust Magazine. Saucy, savvy and fantastically female, Bust Magazine will inspire you to “Take Back the Breast.”
